Transport Canada yesterday announced CA$5.6 million in government funding for a rail infrastructure project at the Central Manitoba Railway‘s Pine Falls subdivision.

The project consists of upgrades to track and supporting infrastructure along nearly 9 miles of the subdivision from CN‘s Symington Yard to the Imperial Oil terminal at Birds Hill, Transport Canada officials said in a press release.

Work will entail installation of new ties, modern rail and other track materials; drainage, grade and ballast improvements; and new mainline switches and crossing improvements that will make track suitable for heavier trains, they said.

The funding is part of the Canadian government’s efforts to support transportation infrastructure and the efficiency of the nation’s trade corridors.

“We are supporting projects that will efficiently move commercial goods to market and people to their destinations, stimulate economic growth, create quality middle-class jobs, and ensure that Canada’s transportation networks remain competitive and efficient,” said Minister of Transport Marc Garneau.

The Central Manitoba Railway, which is owned and operated by Cando Rail Services, is a 67-mile short line running from East Selkirk north of Winnipeg to Carman south of Winnipeg, Manitoba.
