President Donald Trump last week nominated Patrick Fuchs and Michelle Schultz to serve five-year terms on the Surface Transportation Board (STB).

Fuchs, of Wisconsin, is a senior professional staff member working on surface transportation and maritime issues for the U.S. Senate Committee on Commerce, Science and Transportation under the leadership of Chairman John Thune (R-S.D.), according to a White House press release.

He has played an integral role in the development and enactment of major railroad legislation, including the first reauthorization of the STB since its creation in 1996, as well as the first passenger-rail reauthorization in more than seven years.

Fuchs also served as a policy analyst and Presidential Management Fellow at the Office of Management and Budget, where he managed railroad and maritime regulatory reviews.

Schultz, of Pennsylvania, is a deputy general counsel at the Southeastern Pennsylvania Transportation Authority (SEPTA). Prior to joining the agency in 2006, she was an associate with a Philadelphia law firm.

She also clerked for the Superior Court of Pennsylvania and the U.S. Bankruptcy Court for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania.

Fuchs and Schultz are Republicans. If their nominations are confirmed, they will join Republican Ann Begeman, who serves as STB chair, and Democrat Deb Miller.

A second board position that would be filled by a member of the Democratic Party remains open. Trump has not yet announced that nomination.
