Metra to reissue rail-car RFP

Metra plans to reissue its request for proposals (RFP) for new rail cars and open it up to alternative car designs.

The railroad opted to reissue the RFP after receiving only one response to its initial request for new bi-level gallery cars, Metra officials said yesterday in a press release. The agency in April 2017 released the original RFP, which would have provided 75 new gallery rail cars with an option to purchase additional units.

CRRC Sifang America was the lone manufacturer to respond to that original request. As a result, Metra staff recommended issuing a new RFP open to other designs.

“Opening up our request to alternative designs will foster competition between more car builders, which potentially will result in better pricing, a more modern car and a better experience for our customers,” said Metra Chief Executive Officer and Executive Director Jim Derwinski.

The railroad will seek new rail car designs that boost seating capacity since yard space and platform length currently limit the number and length of trains that can operate.

In addition, Metra will consider proposals for alternative car designs that provide lower, platform-level boarding for riders with disabilities and families with strollers.
