The Stockton Terminal and Eastern Railroad (STE) in California has received a grant from the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Central District (UAPCD) for the purchase of a new locomotive.

Under the grant program, the UAPCD is providing cash incentives for the purchase of the environmentally friendly locomotive, according to OmniTRAX Inc., the railroad’s parent.

The locomotive — KLW SE10B T4L unit built by Knoxville Locomotive Works — will be purchased by the year’s end, according to an OmniTRAX press release. The engine complies with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Tier 4 emissions standard.

“We appreciate the partnership with the San Joaquin Valley Unified Air Pollution Central District and the effort they are making to provide incentives to area businesses supporting their vision of improving the quality of life in the communities it serves,” said OmniTRAX Chief Executive Officer Kevin Shuba. “These public-private relationships drive mutually beneficial activities that can dramatically improve our society.”

The grant is part of UAPCD’s Locomotive Program, which provides incentive funds for replacing older locomotives with new, energy efficient models.

OmniTRAX did not disclose the grant amount.
